Binance denies rumors about Changpeng Zhao (CEO of Binance) and information about ties with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) claimed as false news by ChatGPT.
The parties involved in this are yet to be identified, and speculations around organized smear campaigns are on the rise. According to Fortune’s report, artificial intelligence (AI) tools like ChatGPT are being used to create false information.
Key Points:
- A 2018 article by Forbes was used as evidence by ChatGPT, however, the site seems to be showing a “not found” error. Existence of this article is in serious articulation by Binance CSO, Patrick Hillmann.
- He finds the information “ludicrous”, and continues to question reliability on ChatGPT when it comes to journalism. According to Mr. Hillmann, “basic-level fact checking” could have easily exposed the reality.
- Bloomberg report claims that CZ is making a bank of $28B, whereas in reality Zhao claims to be a “small potato” in the crypto-verse.
The Truth Gets Revealed by the CSO of Binance
According to the Twitter handle of Patrick Hillman, the Chief Communication Officer (CSO) of Binance, he released his conversations with ChatGPT. Similar to this conversation, those entities asked ChatGPT whether Changpeng Zhao (CZ) is a communist, and the AI platform cited a fake LinkedIn page of CZ.
Apart from that, a Forbes article from 2018 stated that he had ties with the Chinese Communist Party. This web page is only displaying “not found”, and current evidence points towards the information being fabricated.
Check out what was revealed from Patrick Hillman’s vs. ChatGPT conversation log.
According to this log, we can see that ChatGPT makes claims about CZ being a member of the Youth League Committee of CNPC in the 1990s. The Chinese National Petroleum Corporation also reportedly employed Changpeng Zhao as a software developer.
In reality, CZ’s official LinkedIn profile never stated these facts, as his employment history is not even posted. There are no signs of him being linked with the petroleum giant, CNPC. Zhao was only in high school, and ChatGPT claims him to have been employed in the 1990s.
Can ChatGPT fabricate information by itself?
The AI tool is perceived as a threat in many industries, and this incident is a clear sign that the days of relying on tech are quite a way off. Even though a mistake like this does not pose much of a threat, the power of social media does not take long to turn it into rumors.
The CEO of Binance is facing exactly that, being accused purely because of misinformation. Some experts are very firm about not trusting AI, but we believe that a little fact-checking can help spread misinformation. ChatGPT does not fabricate facts by itself but tries to make the most of the information available on the internet.
In another instance, a Bloomberg report claimed Changpeng Zhao to be worth $28B and a rival of FTX. Binance CEO quickly took it to Twitter to debunk these myths.
It seems that ChatGPT is unable to verify the credibility of information, and even when that day arrives, it is going to be humans checking the authenticity. A sector like journalism demands such a skill at every moment, and it is best to let humans do the fact-checking.
Among the various studies being conducted on ChatGPT’s sourcing procedure, some are even claiming that the AI tool has been instructed to create fake information. If a question does not have a required answer, ChatGPT counterfeits content to deliver the answer.
Binance faced accusations regarding China earlier too.
Back in September 2022, Binance executive Guangving Chen was accused of being a Chinese agent. To these statements, Changpeng Zhao responded that Binance was not incorporated in China.
However, at the end of March 2023, a publication by the Financial Times revealed that Binance had strong connections to China. Binance denied all these accusations and claimed that AI is being used against them. Apart from that, Binance made no attempts to back up these allegations as fake.
